Enter artificial intelligence, the supposed fix. Companies are increasingly turning to AI-driven hiring tools to screen résumés, assess video interviews, and even predict which candidates will be the best cultural fit. The idea is that AI can remove human bias and make hiring purely about skills and qualifications.
But does it? Or are we just replacing one form of discrimination with another—one that’s even harder to detect and challenge?
AI-powered hiring systems have been marketed as a way to eliminate bias and improve efficiency. Instead of overworked recruiters scanning thousands of résumés, AI can quickly analyze candidates based on predetermined criteria, ensuring objective, consistent decision-making. If AI is trained on biased hiring data, it will learn and reinforce those biases. Many companies unknowingly feed their AI systems historical hiring data, which often reflects decades of discrimination. The result? AI models that favor certain groups over others, creating the illusion of objectivity while still producing discriminatory outcomes.
